Teachers Speak: 2018 Bebras India Challenge

Bebras (www.bebras.org) is an international student Computational Thinking Challenge organised in over 60 countries and designed to get students all over the world excited about computing. Bebras India is brought to you by ACM India’s CSpathshala (www.cspathshala.org) initiative.

2018 Bebras India Challenge was held  from 19th – 30th November for age groups 8-18 in English, Gujarati, Marathi and Telugu, with an overwhelming response of 137,081 students, with 52,000 boys and 81,000 girls from 380+ schools across 12 states in India. Its free.  We encourage participation  of as many students as possible and also recognise top performing students with Certificates of Participation, Best in school, Top ranks in the state and Top ranks in the country.

.Bebras Challenge had five Groups: Aryabhatta, Brahmagupta, Bhaskara, Mahavira and Ramanjum. Bebras tasks are designed for the appropriate age groups, a mix of easy, medium and difficult level of questions which the students could solve without any prior knowledge of Computational Thinking in a duration of 45 minutes.

What was interesting was the pouring in of encouraging feedback from the students across the country – private schools in metros to the rural government schools from Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra. Innumerable requests to register more students until the last day of the Challenge!

Mrudula Athale, VPMS, Pune “Our all students are taking challenge but very surprising and happy realization is that some students who never complete any subject work or are very very casual about studies  were also giving test with full concentration and gave the feed back that the test was very interesting.”

Government Schools in Sabarkantha District shared resources to be able to conduct the challenge online. The excitement amongst the teachers was expressed in a few words, “Students are enjoying solving the Bebras Challenge“.

Rajesh Dalvi, Om Shanti School, Gujarat, “all of our students enjoying this event. Thanks. Can we registered more children from another school?”

Sridevi Subramanium, Cochin Refineries, Kerala, “Kids are super excited sir, even the hyper active and distracted ones are meticulously sitting with concentration. Now they  are asking… When is the next test! Even though it is really hectic to have 250+ students doing the test in school within a week,  the happiness and satisfaction on their faces drives our spirit and encourages us to do more.Children are fascinated with the kind of questions”

Ahlada Sudersan, Ekya Schools, Bangalore, “Students enjoyed the Challenge and found it an interesting and cool experience. Complex, tricky logical reasoning questions, great problem solving exercise and required out of box thinking.”

West Bengal

Madhurima, DPS Newtown, Kolkatta, “Bebras Challenge was an excellent initiative to test aptitude, logical thinking and reasoning. My students have enjoyed it thoroughly. Each one of them have shown a lot of interest to solve the puzzles and I really saw them trying…Well Bebras was the talk of school last week.”

We encourage more schools to participate next year. Give the challenge to all/as many as possible not just to a selected few. Bebras challenge is a great way to learn about computational thinking and problem solving skills!
